

Julie DeHollander, RD,CD, (formally Julie Caruso, RD, CD), became passionate about nutrition and natural healing at an early age. She was drawn to Seattle from Chicago to pursue a degree in nutrition and dietetics at Bastyr University, because of their unique scientifically based natural health focused curriculum. Julie received her Bachelor of Science degree in Whole Foods Nutrition & Clinical Dietetics from Bastyr University. Upon graduation, she was selected into the highly competitive graduate Bastyr Dietetic Internship Program, where she vigorously trained in all areas of dietetics. Training sites included Joslin Diabetes Center, Harborview Madison Clinic, Puget Sound Kidney Center, Puget Sound Veterans Hospital, Valley General Hospital, and Woodinville Pediatrics. She completed her Certificate of Training in Adult Weight Management in San Francisco. She worked as the supervising dietitian at The Center for Counseling and Health Resources and as a nutrition counselor at her private practice in Seattle. Currently, Julie provides nutrition counseling and medical nutrition therapy for patients at her practice, Sierra Wellness Nutrition in Grass Valley, California, and globally via phone or skype. Julie is a Registered Certified Dietitian and Nutrition Educator.
Julie is a functional nutritionist who's basic philosophy looks at the whole person, while emphasizing a seasonal, nutrient-dense, whole foods diet whenever possible. Her holistic approach involves adjusting both diet and lifestyle to enhance healing and wellness. She uses whole foods nutrition, functional foods, vitamins and supplements, when appropriate, to augment her practice. She has had extensive training in functional medicine, a field of health care that uses laboratory assessment and early intervention to improve physical, emotional and cognitive function of the body. Functional Nutrition seeks to identify & address the root causes of disease and focuses on disease prevention by correcting these imbalances.
Her specialties include weight management, eating disorders, diabetes, food allergies and sensitivities, vegetarian/vegan nutrition, detoxification and wellness promotion. She is an active member of the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), Dietitians in Integrative and Functional Medicine (DIFM) practice group, Diabetes Care and Education Practice Group, California Dietetic Association, and American Diabetes Association. Julie previously served on the executive board of the North Sound Dietetic Association (NSDA). Julie contributed to the book Hope Help and Healing for Eating Disorders by Dr. Gregory Jantz, has been quoted several times as an expert in nutrition topics, and is a regular contributor of nutrition and health articles to various publications.
Julie believes in lifelong-learning and keeping up with the latest scientifically based nutrition research. She continuously advances her own knowledge base by attending regular seminars and conferences held by experts in the field of nutrition and health care.
